Heads Up Cylinder Heads is owned & operated by Dave & DeDe Layer.

From an early age Dave devoted a passion for “high revving” drag race engines.  This led to building an E/MP 1955 Chevy Sedan Delivery in 1969.  From this first race car on, Dave was always a “hands on guy” always looking for more power, which led to porting his own cylinder heads.

Since “Head Porting” was in its infancy , at this time, learning this skill was tough.  Dave read what he could on the subject and with the help of a “home built” flow bench, designed & built by long time friend Don Rettich, Dave began the long process of educating himself by using the process of “trial & error” or in better terms “cut & flow”.

By the late 1970’s Dave left a secure position at NCR in Dayton, Ohio to take a job at the Performance Clinic working on heads and pretty much “everything engines”.

In the late 1980’s Dave and DeDe turned Heads Up Cylinder Heads into a full time business.

Over the years since Heads Up Cylinder Heads has become the place to go for NHRA Stock & Super Stock cylinder heads.  This specialty in NHRA Stock & Super Stock has also been used to help other racers that have limited runner volumes and/or need “under cover” work, etc.

Also during this period of time Heads Up has become one of the best equipped Head Shops in the U.S., as you can see by looking at the “Shop Section” of the site.  We have accumulated a lot of tools and equipment to continue our never ending R&D program as well as producing the best quality cylinder heads we possibly can.  In 1995 Randy Brewer came on board working part time with Heads Up and then in 1997 became full time and has become a large part of Heads Up operation.

Forty plus years later Heads Up is still actively involved in NHRA Drag Racing.

Their current car is a 2008 Chevy Cobalt built by PK Racing, Pat and Andy Kronenbitter, that Dave still drives.  He also does most of his own engine work and tunes the EFI 305 small block that powers the car.

Please take a pictorial tour of the Heads Up Cylinder Heads website by clicking on the Shop Equipment Section, then through our Customer Section as well.  A video shows the cars that Heads Up and Dave have owned and/or raced over the years.

They certainly have put a “Tattoo on this town”

NHRA Sportsman Drag Racing.
